Survivor: Fiji – Episode 11

Earl’s alliance continues to strengthen.

12th Elimination: Mookie

I have to admit, watching Survivor this week was utterly frustrating.  Knowing that my pick, who looked so solid, was done in by such a horrific series of dumb moves just isn’t sitting well with me.

After having Steph finish second in Guatamala because no one was smart enough to quit playing games and just off Danni, then having the inexplicable run of dominance by the Axis of Idiots ruin my Sally call on Exile Island, followed by the worst twist in Survivor history, the “three-person” final tribal council, unfairly putting Ozzy in second last season, I’m at my wit’s end. Having Dreamz just wreak havoc this season was just adding insult to injury.

Why do I care about my ability to prognosticate who’s going to win?  For a while, I wasn’t sure.  But after a little reflection,  I think, in some strange way, my mind equates rooting for my first episode pick to rooting for the T-Wolves or Patriots.  You basically make a pick based on who you like, and root your heart out for them to win the title of sole Survivor.  This kind of behavior fits in perfectly with my bid to make Survivor take over hockey’s position as the fourth major sport in America. In some ways, the system is even better than the NBA, NFL, and MLB seeing as you get a completely fresh start each season instead being forced to bear the burden of bad trades and salary cap restrictions for years.

Anyway, before I finish this overly long introduction and head onto the recap, there’s one last point I’d like to bring up.

By the way, Maria also liked Edgardo, but opted for Alex the attorney just to be different.  I think Alex is a solid choice. But I feel that lawyers can be a little too greasy for their own good in this game, so I tend to avoid picking them.  But you can pencil in Alex for the hidden immunity idol since Maria’s pick is 2 for 2 in that department.  My first post in the Suvivor: Fiji Blog

Yes, it was a three-way discovery between Alex, Edgardo, and Mookie, but Alex was the one who actually played the hidden immunity idol.  That makes the fiancé’s pick an incredible 3 for 3.  The woman is astounding!

Less astounding, however, is the fact that her pick is now also 3 for 3 in making it farther than mine.  Terry outlasted Sally, Yul won a 5-4 decision for the game over Ozzy, and now Alex is still alive and kicking while Edgardo’s on the jury. This brings up an interesting dilemma: Do I stubbornly attempt to defeat her one of these seasons, or do I just ask her to stop making picks so I can go back to my winning ways?  Tough call.

1. They almost deserve it. Obviously Mookie and Alex were infuriated with Dreamz for stabbing them in the back. They basically kept to themselves and gave peanut-brain the silent treatment.  Dreamz, realizing that his betrayal would hold some major ramifications if he made it to the final, decided to see if he could do some damage control. He made up some lame story about how he never shared information with Earl’s alliance and that he only voted for Mookie because he found out that’s who the vote was for, and that meant they were outnumbered. He said that he voted for Mookie to get on Earl’s good-side now that they’d be getting picked off one by one.  Like I said, a totally lame story.  If Dreamz was actually on their side and did happen to find out that the vote was switched to Mookie, then why didn’t he tell Alex to give the idol back to him?

Alex and Mookie, however, actually appeared to buy it.  I don’t know if they were just trying to play nice to keep their options open, or if they just realized that Dreamz is actually stupid enough to do something like that.  But whatever the cause, the fact that they appeared to take Dreamz at his word on this one makes me think that perhaps these two almost deserve what happened to them.  I don’t think that smart people should have their game ruined by a psychopath’s random decisions, but if they still haven’t gotten wise to the fact that Dreamz can’t be trusted, maybe they were never that smart in the first place.

2. That’s just slimy. In my mind, Alex was the last remaining “good-guy” in the game.  I’ve disliked Mookie from day one, and Earl and Yao Man, while nice guys themselves, have always been my opposition.  So needless to say, I was a little disappointed when Alex went along with Mookie and started going through Yao Man’s bag looking for the idol.

Look, when it comes down to it, anything that will help you win the game is allowed in Survivor, with the exception of actually physically attacking someone. But rooting through Yao Man’s things only served to decrease Alex and Mookie’s chances of winning.  There’s a certain point where a move is so low that it basically cripples your chances of ever getting the majority vote in the final tribal council.  This was one of those moves.  Now you know why I never pick the lawyers on this show.

Further more, it really put a dent in Earl and Yao Man’s strategy.  It just wasn’t right to mess up their well-played game like that. Just a bad move every way you look at it.

3. That’s just dumb. Ok, raise your hand if you were surprised when Dreamz accidentally selected one of his own spots and “blew himself up” during the “Battleship” immunity challenge?  Anyone?

How did this guy get on the show? Who thought he could mentally handle this?  I’m just waiting for some CBS exec to pitch the idea for next fall’s “Are You Smarter Than Dreamz?” game show.  It would probably end up being a big hit except for the fact that every single contestant would walk away with the million dollar prize.

Well, except if they had Cassandra on.  She blew herself up as well… Ugh!

4. Yet another reason to love Jeff Probst.

So after Mookie got the axe, Jeff pointed out that the only people left was an alliance of six, and Alex.  He said that either means that Alex is either the odd man out, or very valuable.  It was just the type of mental prodding needed to get Dreamz, Stacy, and Boo thinking properly.  Without that nudge, you could be guaranteed that they’d follow Earl’s plan and vote Alex off next.  Maybe now they’ll realize that Yao Man has got the idol and is in tight with Earl and Cassandra.  Maybe now they’ll start thinking that the three “outcasts” could actually turn the tables.  Maybe…

But even if they did, Dreamz is still involved. So you know it would fall apart anyway!
