TOP 5 Songs

These are my five favorite songs.

#5.

Dave Matthews Band – #41

Selected Lyrics:

Come and see
I swear by now I'm playing time against my troubles
I'm coming slow but speeding
Do you wish a dance and while I'm in the front
The play on time is won
But the difficulty is coming here

I will go in this way
And find my own way out
I won't tell you to stay
But I'm coming to much more

Why it's TOP 5:  It's one of those songs that's great to play when things aren't going right to give you a little boost of confidence.  It's also in my opinion Dave's finest work thus far.

#4.

Counting Crows – Mr. Jones

Selected Lyrics:

Mr. Jones and me stumbling through the barrio
Yeah and we stare at the beautiful women
She's perfect for you
Man, there's got to be somebody for me
I wanna be Bob Dylan
Mr. Jones wishes he was someone just a little more funky
When everybody loves you,
Ah, son, that's just about as funky as you can be
Mr. Jones and me staring at the video
When I look at the television, I want to see me staring right back at me
We all want to be big stars, but we don't know why and we don't know how
But when everybody loves me, I'm going to be just about as happy as can be
Mr. Jones and me, we're gonna be big stars

Why it's TOP 5:  It's the definitive song of the mid-90's glory days of music.  It's one of those songs that doesn't get a lot of notoriety, but when you mention it, everybody's like "Oh yeah, Mr. Jones!" A song defintely worthy to be place in the Hall of Legends.

#3.

Coldplay – Clocks

Selected Lyrics:

The lights go out and I can't be saved
Tides that I tried to swim against
Have brought me down upon my knees
Oh I beg, I beg and plead singing

Come out of things unsaid
Shoot an apple off my head and a
Trouble that cant be named
A tiger's waiting to be tamed singing

You are…

Why it's TOP 5:  I was really hesitant to put this song all the way up to #2 since it's fairly new.  Especially with such a worthy song like "Mr. Jones" coming in right behind it.  However, I've listened to it five million times over the past few months, so I think I'm safe.  When I listen to this song when I'm running, I feel like I could go ten miles without losing a step.

#2.

U2 – Walk On

Selected Lyrics:

All that you fashion
All that you make
All that you build
All that you break

All that you measure
All that you feel

All that you reason
All that you care

All that you sense
All that you scheme
All you dress up
And all that you see

All you create
All that you wreck
All that you hate

All this you can leave behind

And love
Is not the easy thing
The only baggage
That you can bring

Is all that you can't leave behind

Why it's TOP 5:  It's my favorite song on my favorite album by my favorite band.  It's also the song that U2 played during the Tribute to America after the September 11th tragedy.  It's not only a great song, but you can apply its message in so many ways.

#1.

U2 – Where The Streets Have No Name

Selected Lyrics:

I want to run
I want to hide
I want to tear down the walls
That hold me inside
I want to reach out
And touch the flame
Where the streets have no name

I want to feel sunlight on my face
I see the dust cloud disappear
Without a trace
I want to take shelter from the poison rain
Where the streets have no name

Why it's TOP 5:  It's an amazing song that has a lot of different meanings.  It's also one of the songs played during the halftime show at Super Bowl XXXVI.  When I listen to the performance it just pumps me up like very few other songs can do.
