TOP 5 Super Bowls

The biggest of the NFL's biggest game.

It's the biggest television event of the year. And believe it or not, in the midst of all the media, half-time shows, and wacky commercials, there's actually a football game that goes on in there somewhere.  And so in honor of the single greatest spectacle in America, DeROK.Net brings you a run down of the cream of the crop.

SUPER BOWL XXIII

Description:  49ers 20, Bengals 16

Why it's TOP 5:  Joe Montana leads a tremendous comeback in the final seconds to create the rise of two eras:  The greatness of Montana, and the absolute crappiness of the Bengals.

SUPER BOWL XXV

Description:  Giants 20, Bills 19

Why it's TOP 5:  It's a one point game for goodness sakes!  Not to mention the first Super Bowl I actually watched.  I find it fitting that my first real Super Bowl ended with Scott Norwood missing a 47 yard field goal as time expired – since 11 years later my Super Bowl destiny would rely on a similar play…

SUPER BOWL XXIV

Description: Rams 23, Titans 16

Why it's TOP 5:  Well it was an amazing game that's for sure.  Came down to a play where Kevin Dyson was one yard away from sending the game into OT.  So why isn't it #1?  Well first off, nobody cared one bit cause these were both two recently moved teams that had yet to build up a fan base.  And second, the Titans lost this game on the final play, and if you ask me the best Super Bowl ever should be won on the last play just like…

SUPER BOWL XXXVI

Description: Patriots 20, Rams 17

Why it's TOP 5: Duh! The greatest football team ever finally wins the big one after coming out of nowhere to cap off the biggest Cinderella season ever.  And to top it off,  it had the greatest half-time performance ever by U2. When the Patriots were up 23-3, I said, "Well I'm not complaining, believe me, but I wished that we would've won this thing a little closer."  I would eat those words as the fumble recovery for a touchdown was called back and the Rams added two TD's for a 17-17 tie with only seconds to go.  Then the unspeakable happened – and as Adam Vinatieri's kick soared through the goal posts the greatest fairy tale in the history of sports had finally been written.  If you'll excuse me, I think I need a tissue.  It's getting dusty in here, real dusty…

SUPER BOWL XXXVIII

Description: Patriots 32, Panthers 29

Why it's TOP 5: I thought Super Bowl XXXVI could never be topped.  Well, I was wrong.  Once again I had the thrill of watching Adam Vinatieri send the game winner through the uprights in the final seconds of the game.  However, this time around the game wasn't the story of the underdogs coming out and pummeling the overconfident favorite.  Super Bowl XXXVIII was an epic battle of two teams who held nothing back.  If you want drama, this one had it all.  It was back and forth the entire way, and featured some absolutely spectacular touchdown bombs by the Panthers. And if I'm hyping up plays that went against the Pats, you know they were good.  Super Bowl XXXVIII was a game for the ages.  I'd love to see the game that could knock this one out of the number one spot.

Honorable Mention:

SUPER BOWL XXXII – Broncos 31, Packers 24 – Elway gets his first title.  A great game and a tear jerker.

SUPER BOWL III – Jets 16, Colts 7 – Historically important, and a good game all around.
