TOP 5 U2 Songs

The best songs that U2 has to offer.

U2 has recorded hundreds of songs over the course of their illustrious career.  After taking some time to review my favorites, I've managed to complete the difficult task of narrowing down my five favorite U2 songs.  Here they are…

#5.

Beautiful Day

Selected Song Lyrics:

See the world in green and blue
See China right in front of you
See the canyons broken by cloud
See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out
See the Bedouin fires at night
See the oil fields at first light
And see the bird with a leaf in her mouth
After the flood all the colors came out

What you don't have you don't need it now
What you don't know you can feel it somehow

It was a beautiful day

Why it's one of the TOP 5 U2 Songs:  There are a couple of reasons why "Beautiful Day" made it into the illustrious TOP 5 when there are so many deserving U2 songs.  One of these is the message.  This song is about losing everything and still being happy.  If you listen to the words of the verses they're not overly uplifting, but even with all the problems and uncertainty it's still a beautiful day.  It's a song of contentment and feeling joy that isn't dependent on circumstances.  It's also one of three U2 songs played at halftime during Super Bowl XXVI, where the Patriots became the World Champions. Plus when it's a really nice day outside, this song is just amazing to play.

#4.

With Or Without You

Selected Song Lyrics:

Through the storm we reach the shore
You give it all but I want more
And I'm waiting for you

My hands are tied
My body bruised, she's got me with
Nothing to win and
Nothing left to lose

With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you

Why it's one of the TOP 5 U2 Songs:  "With or Without You", one of the most touching U2 songs,  is about the struggles of love.  Sometimes you feel like you can't stand to be with the person, and yet at the same time you know that you can't bear to be apart.  This song is about very powerful emotions and it has some amazing music to top it off.  Definitely TOP 5.

#3.

City of Blinding Lights

Selected Song Lyrics:

The more you see the less you know
The less you find out as you grow
I knew much more then than I do now

Neon heart, day-glow eyes
The city lit by fireflies
They're advertising in the skies
And people like us

And I miss you when you're not around
I'm getting ready to leave the ground

Oh you look so beautiful tonight…
In the city of blinding lights

Why it's one of the TOP 5 U2 Songs: This is just one of my favorite U2 songs.  There's no real meaning behind it like the other four entries.  I just love the way it sounds.  In fact, I love it so much, I plan on making the theme song for The B.C.

#2.

Walk On

Selected Song Lyrics:

All that you fashion
All that you make
All that you build
All that you break

All that you measure
All that you feel

All that you reason
All that you care

All that you sense
All that you scheme
All you dress up
And all that you see

All you create
All that you wreck
All that you hate

All this you can leave behind

And love
Is not the easy thing
The only baggage
That you can bring

Is all that you can't leave behind

Why it's one of the TOP 5 U2 Songs:  "Walk On" is my favorite U2 song on my favorite U2 album.   It's also the song that U2 played during the Tribute to America after the September 11th tragedy, which makes it one of U2's most meaningful songs.  When you're feeling discouraged, "Walk On" is one of those songs that makes you realize what's really important.

#1.

Where The Streets Have No Name

Selected Song Lyrics:

I want to run
I want to hide
I want to tear down the walls
That hold me inside
I want to reach out
And touch the flame
Where the streets have no name

I want to feel sunlight on my face
I see the dust cloud disappear
Without a trace
I want to take shelter from the poison rain
Where the streets have no name

Why it's one of the TOP 5 U2 Songs:  "Where the Streets Have No Name" is by far the most popular of all U2 songs.  It's also one of the songs played during the halftime show at Super Bowl XXXVI.  But what really makes "Where the Streets Have No Name" stand out among all other U2 songs is how it ignites the arena when played at a live show.  When Bono and the boys start rocking this song out, it just pumps me up like very few other songs can do.
