A Continuation from The Lost Season 3 Review: Part 1

gigantic Looking Glass station. Also, let’s not forget that they had scuba gear! So Charlie definitely didn’t have to die. But I guess being the true hero that he is, good ‘ol Chuck decided that he didn’t want tot do anything to ruin Desmond’s vision of Claire being rescued, even if it would cost him his life.
Even though his death raised a lot of questions, the second-to-last episode leading up to his demise was absolutely incredible. “Greatest Hits” had to have been the most gut-wrenching episode in Lost history! It was just painful to watch. As much as I joke and use the whole “it’s got a little dusty” line, TV shows and movies almost never get to me. I’m far to much of a critic to forget about reality and get emotionally invested in the characters of a show. But Charlie had my stomach in absolute knots the entire time. I’ll never forget watching him write down “#1 – The day I met you” and then getting ready to swim to his death. I just sat there with a blank stare on my face and said to the fiancé, “Oh my goodness. This is just awful. This is one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen.” If you’re going to get written off a hit television show, this is the way to go. I’m pretty sure after that performance Dominic Monaghan will go down in history as “Charlie”, instead of the fourth hobbit. |

Naveen Andrews
|
The reason that I feel Sayid lost a step this season has nothing to do with Naveen Andrew’s acting or Sayid changing in some way. The reason I felt he wasn’t as good was that he simply didn’t get the same amount of screen time. He was always just tagging along on some mission, but never the character that was leading the story anyhere. But seeing how he’s still healing the wounds caused by Ana Lucia’s stray bullets, I’ll cut Sayid some slack and look forward to his resurgence in Season 4.
Well, if he’s even in Season 4. That’s a big question mark for everybody except Jack and Kate at this point. Isn’t this show awesome? |
|
Jorge Garcia (Hugo Reyes a.k.a. Hurley) You know, I wanted to cut Sayid some slack, but then there’s Hurley. I mean what was a further stretch, Sayid and Shannon or Hurley and Libby? Tough call, right? Yet somehow Hurley managed to bounce back from his woman’s death and put on a solid performance. On the other hand, Hurley was blessed with perhaps the most screen time he’s ever had. The |
Big Kahuna played a big role around camp with Jack gone, getting Sawyer to step up and take charge. He was also involved in the Nikki and Paolo escapade as well as the whole “van” ordeal. And who can forget his late-season heroics which saved the lives of Sayid, Bernard, and Jin?
One question though. In the finale, how on earth did the “Other” shoot at Hurley and miss? |

Emilie de Ravin (Claire Littleton) Claire definitely wasn’t a heavy hitter this year as far a story development goes. But then again, she’s never been. Her biggest impact this year was, once again, providing the love interest for Charlie. And as you can probably judge from my gushing about Charlie’s death above, that was a very important part of Season 3. What I would like to know if if Jack ever figures out that |
Claire’s his half-sister. I wonder if the connection was ever made once they got off the island. Of course, you can chalk that up to yet another one of the hundreds of questions I was left asking after the finale. |

Yunjin Kim (Sun-Hwa Kwon) and Daniel Dae Kim (Jin-Soon Kwon) Just when it seemed that Jin and Sun were starting to resolve their marital problems, then we have to go and find out about Sun’s infidelities. The hoochie! Anyway, the fact that all women who get pregnant on the island die was shaping up to be a fantastic storyline for Season 5, which at the show’s current pace would be Suns’ 2nd trimester. But now, one has to wonder whether Sun’s being rescued will alter the status of the pregnancy and let her live? Claire conceived off the island and her status stayed the same, so maybe the same holds true for Sun. See, it’s questions like these that make the ending of Season 3 so incredible! The entire series just got flipped on it’s head! I have no idea where they’re going to take the show now. I love it!

Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond David Hume) Look at who had to go and get all psychic on us, brotha! While Desmond’s “flashback becomes the whole episode” episode left me a little miffed, I felt that he was a solid addition in his first role as a regular. Initially the “psychic” angle seemed to be a little cheesy, but after seeing how the season played out with Penelope and Charlie, it was pretty necessary to the |
plotline. And I can’t help but wonder what further contributions he’ll be making in Season 4 now that he’s off the island and probably reunited with Penny. There’s | |
|
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Mr. Eko) I enjoyed Mr. Eko’s time on the show, but it was definitely time for his character to move on. He just seemed totally lost this season. So it really wasn’t much of a surprise when the Smoke Monster came and did him in. Those “Tailies” really didn’t stick around for long, did they?

Kiele Sanchez (Nikki) and Rodrigo Santoro (Paolo) I was definitely in the anti-Nikki and Paolo camp when Season 3 began. They were played by two very sub-par actors which made them stick out like sore thumbs among the talented Lost regulars. Their abrupt and seemingly pointless arrival just didn’t make much sense. I can’t say that I ever went to the extremes that some people did and started ranting on internet message boards calling for their execution, but I definitely didn’t like the duo. Eventually the uproar caused the Lost writers to address the Nikki and Paolo situation. All they had to say about the gruesome twosome was that they had a reason for including them this season and that we wouldn’t be disappointed when we found out what that reason was. Well that’s really all I needed to hear as I have complete faith in the creative genius of the Lost writing staff. And sure enough, my faith was made whole during the infamous “Nikki and Paolo” episode. I was a little bit surprised that the episode didn’t really contain anything that altered the overall storyline of the show. The writer’s words had made me suspect that the two would somehow play an integral part in moving the mystery along. However, the Twighlight Zone-esque stand-alone story satisfied me just the same. Watching these two awful characters get buried alive left me pleasantly disturbed. |

Michael Emerson (Benjamin Linus)
Without question, the best actor on this entire show is Michael Emerson. Can you imagine anyone playing the role of Ben and having it come off half as good? I just don’t know how he does it. He comes off as a filthy liar, yet at the same time, you’re dying to trust him. He’s frighteningly psychotic while simultaneously brilliant. And all the little quirks and nuances that go |
into his performances just add to the total picture. Its absolutely incredible to watch. If there’s one person I sincerely hope is not in that casket, it’s Ben. I can’t imagine going back to this show without him.
So yes, Michael Emerson is hands down the best actor on this show. Either that, or he’s just being himself and we’ve got a real life Hannibal Lechter on the loose! |

|
Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet) Juliet brought to Season 3, what Ben brought to Season 2. Basically, she was the one character who you were never sure was telling the truth. Was she really on Jack’s side and trying to take down Ben? Or was she just one of his pawns being used to manipulate his biggest threat? In the end, it appears that Juliet was actually loyal to Jack all along as she played a major role in getting everyone rescued. Then again, maybe that wasn’t such a good thing after all… |
So that’s my take on Lost Season 3 and all the main characters who starred in it. Like I said at the beginning, this was clearly the best season ever! And I’d ever go so far as to rank it #2 behind The OC Season 1 for the best season of any show ever. In the end, it was really the finale that threw Season 3 over the top. There had been plenty of surprises in the other two finales, but nothing even close to Jack screaming at Kate to go back to the island in a flash forward! I can’t help but wonder what we’re in store for during Season 4. How will they work the flashbacks? Will the show pick up from where we left the survivors on the island about to be rescued and use flash-forwards now? Or will we pick up from Kate leaving Jack at the airport and keep flashing back to what happened during the rescue and the subsequent consquences? Who knows? Who ever knows anything with this show?!?! You gotta love Lost! |
