Bob Saget

The cheesy sitcom dad we wish we all had.

Bob Saget of Full House

The year is 1990.  Ask any kid who the ideal father is.  Or ask any wife who they wish their husband was a little more like.  The answer would invariably be Bob Saget.  Of course we all knew him as Danny Tanner, the neat-freak anal retentive father on “Full House”.  And as quirky as Bob Saget might have been, there was nobody on earth a kid would’ve rather gone to when they had a problem.  DJ, Stephanie, and Michelle didn’t have a mom, but they didn’t need one.  They had Danny, and that was more than enough.

Of course, Bob Saget never limited himself to “Full House”.  He was the host of the TV craze “America’s Funniest Home Video’s”.  And even though the guy flat out stunk at making up voices to narrate the home movies, we still loved the guy.  Bob Saget personified everything a middle aged American should be.  He was kind, funny, and faithful to his wife.  The man never let an episode go by without reassuring his wife that he’d be home soon.  Let’s face it, in 1990, Bob Saget was the man.

I know what you’re thinking.  DeROK’s either gone gay, or is smoking something really weird.  Bob Saget?  But the fact that you’re thinking that is precisely the reason why Bob Saget belongs in the Hall of Legends.  By the time 1995 rolled around, America had it’s fill of TGIF.  We didn’t want the Tanners.  We wanted the Bundys and the Simpsons.  And so in a matter of years, Bob Saget went from being everyone’s favorite celebrity, to a professional punchline.  It was amazing.  I remember in 9th grade, if you were in a dissing contest with someone, all you needed to do was somehow connect your opponent to Bob Saget and you had the thing won.  Just look at the guy!

This is a man who will never be able to hold down another serious TV role in his life.  Bob Saget is completely finished.  But here’s the thing you’ve got to remember: he sacrificed it all for us.  You Google search the guy and all you’ll get is sites calling him Bob Faget.  But the only reason we even know him is because he made us feel good for half an hour every Friday night at eight.  I don’t know about you, but my childhood wouldn’t have been the same if it weren’t for Danny Tanner and “Full House”.  And so for that, I’d like to take a moment and give thanks to Bob Saget, a true legend.

But don’t think for a moment that the next time I’m getting made fun of I’ll hesitate to pull out the Bob Saget card.  Works every time…
